The Faculty of Education wishes to advise all La Trobe University representatives that, from 1 January 2008, there will be a change to the English language requirements for pre-service teacher education programs offered by the Faculty.
The changes are designed to reflect the requirements of the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) of an IELTS of 7.0 (or approved equivalent) for teacher registration in Victoria.
From January 1 2008, an IELTS of 7.0 with no individual band score less than 6.5 (or approved equivalent) will be required to demonstrate English language proficiency for entry to the following programs:
Undergraduate Bachelor of Education (Primary) Bachelor of Physical and Health Education Bachelor of Physical and Outdoor Education Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Arts Education Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Science Education
Postgraduate Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary) Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) Graduate Diploma in Education (P-12) Master of Teaching (new course in 2007; as per below)

This exciting new Master's program aims to prepare students for a career in an international business and legal environment. The degree is designed to provide non-lawyers with an understanding of domestic and international commercial law.
This one year full-time program will be offered at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus with its first intake for international students in Semester 2, 2007.
Admission Requirements
A Bachelor of Laws or any first degree approved by La Trobe University.
An IELTS result of 6.5 (with no individual band score less than 6.0) or approved equivalent is also required to demonstrate English language proficiency.
Tuition Fee
The annual tuition fee for students commencing in 2007 is $A 17,500.*
Graduate Certificate in Global Business Law
This Graduate Certificate course aims to: assist the understanding of the globalising fields of commercial and trade law; enable lawyers and other professionals to think and operate in global terms; acquaint lawyers with the institutions, instruments and processors of law making in the selected global commercial fields; and to bring together lawyers and other profesionals, who may have different perspectives, so that they can learn to exchange views and work on issues. This six-month full-time program is offered at Melbourne (Bundoora) campus in Semester 1 2007. Please note that this course has an earlier commencement date of 30 January 2007.
Admission Requirements
Applicants require a Bachelor of Laws (of at least four years duration full-time) or higher degree qualification in law or another suitable discipline.
An IELTS result of 6.5 (with no individual band score less than 6.0) or approved equivalent is also required to demonstrate English language proficiency.
Tuition Fee
The total tuition fee for students commencing in 2007 is $A8,750.* Master of Global Business Law

Bachelor of Agricultural Science/Bachelor of International Development
The Bachelor of Agricultural Science/Bachelor of International Development is a five year full-time double degree program
The program is designed to provide graduates with understanding in two complementary discipline areas. The first is the scientific understanding of the processes in agriculture, while the second is an understanding of the political and social requirements for international development, when developing countries grapple with political, economic and social restraints to alleviate poverty and participate in the global economy.
The challenges which occur in agriculture and international development are among the most important that impact on global development. Graduates will be well-equipped to find employment in the development assistance field.
This program is offered at Melbourne (Bundoora) campus in Semester 1 2007.
Admission Requirements
To meet the University's minimum academic entry requirements for applying to an undergraduate progam, international students must hold a qualification which is deemed equivalent to the Australian Year 12 Higher School Certificate.
An IELTS result of 6.0 (with no individual band score less than 6.0) or approved equivalent is also required to demonstrate English language proficiency.

Master of Agricultural Science and Agribusiness
This two year, full-time Master of Agricultural Science and Agribusiness degree is an innovative offering from La Trobe University. Its graduates will acquire a range of skills and understanding in the production, sustainability and agribusiness areas of agriculture, with the opportunity for additional focus in the plant, animal or biotechnology areas. In addition, the core units and case study teaching style will impart generic skills required for competitive positions in research or management, for science or agribusiness organisations.
The program is offered at Melbourne (Bundoora) campus in Semester 1 2007.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must have completed a degree equivalent to an Australian Bachelor of Science or its equivalent with a specialisation in an agricultural or biological discipline. Consideration will also be given to applicants who can demonstrate an equivalent qualification based on a degree or diploma in addition to significant work experience in an area of direct relevance. Selection will be based on academic merit.
An IELTS result of 6.5 (with no individual band score less than 6.0) or approved equivalent is also required to demonstrate English language proficiency.
Tuition Fee
The annual tuition fee for students commencing in 2007 is $A18,000.*
Master of Teaching
The Master of Teaching is a two-year full-time course consisting of 240 points of study. The program provides a Master’s level course which will allow international students wishing to gain a recognised teaching qualification to register as teachers in the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).
The program includes theoretical studies in curriculum, teaching methodology and classroom management, together with supervised teaching practice in schools, an internship and a research project. There are two streams - Primary and Secondary - and students may enrol in either stream.
There is an increasing demand anticipated for qualified teachers both internationally and within Australia.
This program is offered at both Melbourne (Bundoora) and Bendigo campuses, with the first intake for international students in Semester 2, 2007.
Academic Entry Requirements
For the Primary stream: For candidates seeking registration as a primary teacher the minimum prerequisite is an approved Bachelor’s degree. Year 12 mathematics at secondary school level or approved international equivalent is recommended.
For the Secondary stream: Students seeking registration as a secondary teacher should have an approved Bachelor’s degree with sequences of study in relevant areas that satisfy the prerequisites specified for the particular teaching method. Normally this is at least a sub-major in each of two recognised teaching subjects.
English Language Requirements
An IELTS result of 6.5 (with no individual band score less than 6.0) or approved equivalent is also required to demonstrate English language proficiency.
Note: The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) requires an IELTS of 7.0 for teacher registration in Victoria. From January 1 2008, an IELTS of 7.0 with no individual band score less than 6.5 (or approved equivalent) will be required to demonstrate English language proficiency for entry to this program.
Applicants who are required to submit evidence of English language proficiency must also successfully pass an oral interview with the program coordinator. Where face-to-face interviews are impractical, phone interviews can be arranged.

The annual tuition fee for students commencing in 2007 is $A15,200.*
