It is designed to extend and develop students’ experience and knowledge in the field of media production and their understanding of creative and critical practice within the media industries. The program will be mainly project based, with students working in small groups on a range of media production projects. The structure of the degree has been designed to be as flexible as possible, to allow students to customise their activities according to their interests and specialisations. Students will be encouraged to explore how the boundaries between previously separate forms of media production are blurring. A significant focus of the degree will be on students developing their understanding of how emerging concepts such as interactivity, connectivity and convergence and emerging technologies such as DVD, interactive video and digital radio are creating new creative possibilities, production processes and delivery systems for more traditional forms of media production, such as film & video production and TV & radio broadcasting. The Masters will include research components, with students asked to place their production work in broader social, historical, cultural and theoretical contexts. There will also be a strong industry emphasis in the program, so that students have a high level of industry readiness on graduating, with a realistic and well-informed sense of their career possibilities in this rapidly changing area. Back to top Study Environment - Studying media production at RMIT allows students to take full advantage of the university's unique strength in student media broadcasting, through student television group RMITV (which broadcasts on Channel 31) and student radio station SYN-FM (which last year won a full-time broadcast licence). AFI Research Collection - In addition to its teaching programs the School of Applied Communication operates a unique national research collection. The AFI Research Collection (incorporating the Henry Mayer Collection) is a non-lending collection of international film, television and communication industry resources maintained for over 30 years by the Australian Film Institute. Described by the National Library of Australia as a 'heritage collection', the AFI Research Collection is widely used by students, academics, media industry researchers, and members of the public. See www.afiresearch.rmit.edu.au Facilities - Master of Media Production students have access to the latest technology for their coursework, including professional digital video and 16mm film cameras, high-end video and audio postproduction suites, and a fully equipped television studio. The radio studios at RMIT are all equipped with the latest industry standard digital recording and editing software. Facilities include four production suites, an on-air studio and a fully digital multi-track recording and mixing facility. Students also have access to a specialized media computer lab for classes in online production and emerging media. Back to top Program details Commencement Date: Semester 2, 2004 Duration: 1.5 years The program runs over three semesters full-time, with a core strand and an elective strand. Core strand (Media Project 1, 2 & 3) The Media Project strand comprises 50% of the degree and is designed to maximize student choice in the media production projects they are working on. Subject to approval, students will have the option of working in specialised roles on a range of productions, or focusing on one major project. The emphasis on project work will provide students with flexibility in developing and producing work that reflects their own areas of interest, as well as opening up possibilities for collaboration with the community and industry. Examples of anticipated project types include short film dramas, pilots for TV series, web radio stations and interactive DVD documentaries. Elective strand Students will be able to choose from the eMerging Media strand offered by the program or a range of electives offered by other Masters by coursework programs within the School of Applied Communication (Masters in Communications, Design & Advertising). eMerging Media strand (eMerging Media 1,2,& 3) The eMerging Media strand will be centred on exploring the convergence of traditional forms of media within new media production (for instance, media production work done for the internet, DVD, and interactive CD Rom). In eMerging Media 1, the focus will be on introducing students to some of the issues involved in creating a convergent media text by being required to create an online media product that will integrate video, sound, image and text. In eMerging Media 2 & 3, students will develop and produce larger, more dynamic and innovative eMerging media projects with a documentary focus. Media Contexts Media Contexts is a compulsory first semester 12 credit-point course designed for students to develop an understanding of the broader theoretical contexts in which media production projects operate. A focus of this course will be on introducing students to the use of web-based journals or blogs as a form of research, reflection, data collection and analysis. These interactive journals will provide a writing space that may include text, images, video and audio as well as feedback from other students. The use of blogs will be central to the successful completion of an individual student research project concerning recent developments in TV, video or radio. Student-centred research using this form will be employed throughout the program, so that the capabilities introduced in Media Contexts will provide a foundation for the skills in research, reflection and evaluation required in the production of Media Projects in second and third semesters. The Media Production Industry This course is offered in the final semester of the program and is designed to enhance the ability of graduates to establish themselves in the media production industry by providing them with: An understanding of legal, business, marketing and careers issues specific to the media production industry; A detailed understanding of one area of the industry they choose to research; A broad understanding of existing and emerging career opportunities, locally and internationally; A thorough knowledge of industry structure, sectors and possible career paths.
