Do you need to meet this requirement? In order to make a valid application for a General Skilled Migration visa which you can apply for, and be granted, while you are in Australia, you must meet the 2 year study requirement. If you are applying for any other General Skilled Migration visa, you will also need to meet the 2 year study requirement if you are seeking an exemption from the recent work experience requirement. How can you satisfy this study requirement? In order to meet the 2 year study requirement, you must, in the 6 months immediately before the date of making your application complete either: a degree, diploma or trade qualification, other than in English language proficiency, as a result of at least 2 years of full time study at an Australian educational institution whilst you are present in Australia or more than 1 degree, diploma or trade qualification, other than in English language proficiency, as a result of a total period of 2 years full time study at an Australian educational institution whilst you are present in Australia. Each course of study must be completed at the Australian educational institution where it was commenced. When are you considered to have 'completed' a degree, diploma or trade qualification? 'Completed' means that you have met the requirements for the award of a degree, diploma or trade qualification. The date of completion of an Australian qualification is the first date on which the tertiary institution publicly notifies you that you have met the requirements for the award. This notification can occur by letter, the internet, publication in a newspaper, e-mail or bulletin board at the tertiary institution. This means that the '6 month period' for lodging an application for a General Skilled Migration visa that can be granted whilst you are in Australia begins from the date you are advised you have successfully completed your course. It is not the date of conferral of your award. The date of conferral is the date that you actually receive your degree. What courses are acceptable under this requirement? To meet the 2 year full-time study requirement, the course that you complete must meet all of the following: -be undertaken at an Australian educational institution -be registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) -comprise the equivalent of 2 years study — that is, 4 terms/semesters over a minimum total period of 16 months -have a full-time workload for each semester course instruction must be in English. Two years of study undertaken in less than 16 months is not acceptable because it reduces the actual time you spend studying in Australia. What if you have completed more than one qualification? Where you complete more than one degree, diploma or trade qualification, this will be accepted as meeting the 2 year full-time study requirement if: each course of study is undertaken at an Australian educational institution in Australia each course of study is completed at the Australian educational institution where it was commenced each course of study is registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) each course of study is undertaken full-time the total time spent studying in Australia full-time is equivalent to 2 years — that is, 4 terms/semesters over a minimum period of 16 months the instruction for each course was conducted in English. What if you have completed study not undertaken in Australia? If you have undertaken study whilst not physically present in Australia, this study cannot be used to satisfy the 2 year study requirement. For example, if you have studied at an overseas campus of an Australian educational insitution, or undertaken study by correspondence with an Australian educational insitution, this study is not acceptable. This is because all study must be undertaken while you are physically present in Australia.
