Graduate pharmacists snapped up

Graduate pharmacists are in great demand in Australia, a national survey has found.

Nearly 99 per cent of all Australia's graduate pharmacists achieve full-time employment in their chosen field soon after they complete their studies, according to the Graduate Destination Survey, 2005.

The study found 98.7 per cent of graduate pharmacists settle into the workforce within four months of obtaining their degree.

That figure is better than the average as the survey showed that almost 81 per cent of graduates overall find full-time work.

The only graduates who achieve a higher rate of employment are mining engineers with 98.9 per cent in full-time employment after study.

Medicine reported full-time employment among 98.3 per cent of graduates, 88.4 per cent of law graduates found jobs and nearly 78 per cent of education graduates were placed in the workforce.

Although pharmacy graduates achieve very high employment, their salaries in their first year are relatively modest at an average of $30,000.

However, another survey showed pharmacists' wages almost double 12 months after they graduate, rising to $58,000 the following year.

The Pharmacy Post-Registration Survey for 2005 was conducted by Graduate Careers Australia for the Committee of Heads of Pharmacy Schools in Australia and New Zealand.

The Dean of Monash University's Victorian College of Pharmacy, Professor Colin Chapman, who chaired the committee, said the results provided the first true picture of young pharmacists' income and employment prospects.

"It is particularly encouraging to note that earnings for young pharmacists after their compulsory registration year are competitive with other professions," Professor Chapman said.

Top award for Pharmacy alumnus

A Monash University pharmacy graduate, who pioneered drug delivery to patients with epilepsy and AIDS, has received an inaugural US award for leadership in technology transfer.
Professor Valentino J. Stella, Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Kansas, received the Kansas University Technology Transfer Leadership Award at a ceremony in the US.
Professor Stella graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) from the Victorian College of Pharmacy in 1968. He completed a doctorate in analytical pharmaceutical chemistry at Kansas University in 1971. In 1997 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws and Letters (LLD), from Monash University.
The Kansas University Technology Transfer Leadership Award was presented to Professor Stella in recognition of his dedication to the commercialisation and dissemination of technology for the benefit of society. His influence as an educator and mentor extends around the world, with more than 170 former graduate students now working in 15 countries.
Professor Stella's research centres on the application of physical and organic chemistry to the study of factors affecting drug delivery. He is known for his work in improving drug stability and solubility especially as these relate to anticancer and antiAIDS drugs.

His award, an inscribed medallion featuring Kansas University's Dyche Hall, was presented by Kansas University's Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Professor David Shulenburger as part of a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the federal Bayh-Dole Act.

That legislation, co-sponsored by former Kansas Senator Robert J. Dole, shifted ownership and control of patents stemming from federally funded research to the institution that performed the research.

Previously, federal agencies retained patent rights, resulting in few commercial applications. Passage of the Bayh-Dole Act led to a major expansion of technology transfer and licensing efforts at Kansas and other US universities.
